TCU "stoned"-frogs and Linsanity cont.

Well this is kind of old but I still thought it was interesting.  A few weeks ago the Big 12 and new member TCU had a bit of a problem on their hands.  There was a drug bust on campus that had 17 students arrested and 4 of those players were on the TCU football team.  During the 6 month investigation the suspects were caught selling marijuana, ecstasy, cocaine, and perscription drugs.  One of the players, Tanner Brock, had originally told an undercover cop that 60 players should have failed a surprise drug test and that he had failed it for sure.  Later it was revealed that only 5 players tested positive for large amounts of marijuana. There were 11 other players that had trace amounts but were within the margin of error for the test.

This probably couldn't have come at a worse time for TCU.  With their departure from the Mountain West to the Big 12 they wanted a squeaky clean record.  Now that may have been tarnished.  With Gary Patterson viewed as one of the best college football coaches, leading TCU to a 2 BCS bowls, and then getting them into the coveted "big boy league" of the Big 12 things were looking good.  Now they seem to be falling apart at the seems.  Not only has it hurt their public image it's starting to hurt their recruiting too.  Well on February 1st this year (national signing day) Coach Patterson ordered a drug test after a recruit decided not to sign with them because the recruit had heard of rampant drug use there.

Well on a unrelated note I thought that I'd give you a little bit of an update on Jeremy Lin, the NBA's media darling this year.  Well things aren't going so good for him right now.  After leading the Knicks to a 7-1 turnaround and bringing them back up to .500 they played a team that could play some defense.  Things did not turn out too good for Jeremy.  When they played the Heat (the league leading best record) he was in for a rude awakening.  You could really say that Lin felt the heat when facing Lebron and company and melted under the pressure.  Scoring just 8 points, only 3 assists, and shooting a dismal 9.1% from the floor was a rude awakening for him.  Things aren't looking to good for them right now either as they are down against the Cavaliers right now.

Well something that was lost in all of the hubbub about Jeremy Lin was the apologies that ESPN and Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream sent to him.  First, the ESPN apology was about a racial slur that is used in a common expression when describing weakness in a team or group.  Now if Lin wasn't of Asian American decent then I doubt that this would have gotten any media attention, but since its a slur used for people of his race it got attention pretty fast.  The headline that ESPN ran was "a chink in the armor".  Used when Lin and the Knicks lost to the Hornets giving them the first loss of Lin's rise to stardom.  ESPN later issued this statement:

"Last night, ESPN.com’s mobile web site posted an offensive headline referencing Jeremy Lin at 2:30 am ET. The headline was removed at 3:05 am ET. We are conducting a complete review of our cross-platform editorial procedures and are determining appropriate disciplinary action to ensure this does not happen again. We regret and apologize for this mistake"

Ben and Jerry's on the other hand is a much tastier story with more to bite into.  Known for having crazy flavors (Chunky Monkey, Half Baked, and Chubby Hubby) they introduced a new one a little while ago to honor their Harvard graduated with "Taste the lin-sanity" ice cream.  Sold on the Harvard square shop this new ice cream has vanilla frozen yogurt, lychee honey swirls, and fresh waffle cones but that's not what they originally had in it.  It originally had fortune cookies.  Now you don't have to be a fortune teller to know that's a bad idea.  There were some pretty upset people about it.  They changed the ingredient and said that most people were happy with it, but were apologetic to those that were offended by it.

Well that's all for now.  See you next week!
